Alex has big dreams of getting out of the mill and having a better life. She has a group of friends who she hangs out with regularly at a local bar called Mawby's. The bar hosts nightly cabaret sessions where non-professional dancers can try their luck at performing. Alex has always dreamed of being a professional dancer, but has no educational background to get into a school. One night Alex decides to try her hand at dancing at the bar and is met with approval and applause. From that time on she spends a great deal of her spare time in her loft apartment practicing new routines which will make her dance performance even better. She becomes a regular dancer at the bar while still holding her job at the steel mill. In the same town there is another club which features dancers who do strip routines. Alex and another girl are approached by the owner of the strip club who wants to make them stars by having them perform strip routines in his club. Alex holds onto her morals and refuses to dance in his club, but her friend eventually folds and joins him. The story shows the struggles Alex goes through as she tries to keep her dignity, while also performing somewhat risque dance routines which men find very provocative. There is also a lot of competition and jealousy between the dancers and the atmosphere at the clubs is somewhat on the dark and seedy side. A shining light in Alex's life is in the character of Hanna Long, who is a retired ballerina. On the advice of her dance mentor, Alex decides to apply at the Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance.
