Emma (Mother) is a 2016 Indonesian drama film directed by Riri Riza and based on a true story. The film follows the life of Emma (Cut Mini Theo), a mother of two who struggles to provide for her family after her husband is imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. With mounting debts and no means of income, Emma is forced to take desperate measures to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads.

The story is set in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, where Emma lives with her son Dwi (Christoffer Nelwan) and daughter Adel (Aurora Ribero). Emma's husband, Hendra (Arman Dewarti), is a mechanic and the sole breadwinner of the family. However, he is falsely accused of stealing a car and is sentenced to five years in prison.

Emma is devastated by the news of her husband's imprisonment but is determined to support her children. She takes a job at a nearby factory, but her meagre income is not enough to pay for their daily expenses. Emma's neighbours and friends try to help her, but they too are struggling to make ends meet.

As the story unfolds, Emma is faced with increasingly difficult choices. She is forced to sell her jewellery and furniture to pay for her children's school fees and medical bills. She even considers borrowing money from loan sharks, but the exorbitant interest rates leave her with little choice but to decline.

Despite these hardships, Emma remains a strong and resilient mother who will do whatever it takes to protect her family. She takes on odd jobs to supplement her income and even learns to fix motorcycles, following in her husband's footsteps. Through sheer perseverance, Emma manages to keep her family afloat, even when all odds seem against them.

The movie paints a realistic portrait of life in Jakarta's urban slums, where poverty and desperation are a daily reality for many. The film highlights the struggles of single mothers and their children, who are often overlooked and forgotten by society. It also raises important questions about social justice and the criminal justice system, which can be unjust and biased against the poor and marginalized.

The acting in the film is top-notch, with Cut Mini Theo delivering a standout performance as Emma. She portrays the character with sensitivity and depth, conveying the emotions of a mother who is struggling to keep her family together. Christoffer Nelwan and Aurora Ribero also deliver strong performances as Emma's children, bringing a sense of realism and authenticity to their roles.

Overall, Emma (Mother) is a powerful and poignant film that offers a glimpse into the lives of those who are struggling to survive in an unjust and unforgiving world. It is a timely reminder that despite the challenges we face, love and hope can still shine through the darkness.
