Escape Velocity is a 1999 Canadian sci-fi thriller that takes place in a near-future world where space exploration and colonization have become a reality. The film follows the story of Christine, played by Wendy Crewson, a woman who has spent the last decade of her life traveling to and from a remote planet, mining and producing a valuable and life-sustaining mineral called Bismuth. For years she has been serving the interests of her authoritarian boss, Alex, played by Patrick Bergin, who has been using her services to gain wealth and power.

The movie begins with Christine's return to Earth after completing another mission. Her homecoming is marred by a series of anomalous events that suggest that something has gone terribly wrong. As she tries to piece together the truth, she discovers that the company she works for has a dark, hidden agenda. Her investigation brings her into contact with an underground, subversive movement fighting against the increasing corporatization of space and the exploitation of its resources.

Christine's quest for the truth is further complicated by her relationships with two men - her ex-husband, Frank, played by Peter Outerbridge, and the Bismuth miner, Benzinger, played by Peter Krantz. Frank, a former astronaut, is now a successful lawyer who originally introduced Christine to the Bismuth venture, but who has since moved on and found a new family. Benzinger, on the other hand, is the local hero of the Bismuth mining community, a rough and ready sort who ultimately becomes Christine's ally.

As Christine delves deeper into the dark secrets of her employer, she discovers that the Bismuth trade may in fact be a vast cover-up for something much more sinister. The truth ultimately leads her into a dangerous, life-threatening situation where she must confront those responsible for the conspiracy.

Escape Velocity is essentially a character-driven film that deals with several different themes, including corporate greed, exploitation, and the importance of truth and personal freedom in a society where these values are increasingly threatened. Wendy Crewson gives a superb performance as Christine, a strong and driven woman dealing with personal and professional challenges. Her portrayal of an independent woman who can be hurt and vulnerable as well as tough and resourceful makes Christine a fascinating character to watch.

The supporting cast is equally strong, with Patrick Bergin giving a chilling performance as the ruthless, manipulative Alex, who will stop at nothing to achieve his objectives. Peter Outerbridge brings a touch of class to the production with his portrayal of the more introspective and conflicted Frank, while Peter Krantz adds some much-needed humor and grit to the film as the boisterous Benzinger.

Writer/Director Lloyd A. Simandl, best known for his work in sexploitation movies, delivers an unexpectedly mature film that is both suspenseful and exciting. The film's pacing is perfect, as the tension gradually builds throughout the movie, culminating in an intense and satisfying climax. Simandl also demonstrates a deft hand with character development, ensuring that the audience cares about each of the protagonists despite their flaws.

Overall, Escape Velocity is a gripping and fascinating sci-fi thriller that is sure to satisfy even the most jaded of sci-fi fans. Its themes of exploitation and corporate greed are universal and timeless, making the film just as relevant today as it was when it was first released in 1999. If you haven't seen this movie yet, make sure to give it a try.
