In the year 2029, the world has been decimated by a nuclear war and is ruled by an artificial intelligence called Skynet. In order to prevent the human resistance from winning the war, Skynet sends a cyborg assassin called a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) back in time to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the mother of the future resistance leader John Connor.
At the same time, the human resistance sends a soldier named Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) back in time to protect Sarah and ensure that John is born. Upon arrival, Kyle must track down Sarah and convince her of the danger she is in. However, the Terminator has already begun his mission and begins hunting down Sarah.
The majority of the film follows Sarah and Kyle as they try to evade the Terminator and figure out a way to stop it. The Terminator is relentless in its mission and uses its advanced technology to track down its target. Schwarzenegger's portrayal of the Terminator is iconic, with his stoic facial expressions and unforgettable line "I'll be back."
As Sarah and Kyle continue to evade the Terminator, they also begin to form a bond, with Sarah realizing that Kyle is actually John's father. Their relationship adds an emotional depth to the film and makes the audience invested in their survival.
Director James Cameron does an excellent job of building tension throughout the film. The action sequences are intense and well-choreographed, but also serve a purpose in advancing the plot. The film also features some impressive practical effects, most notably the scene where the Terminator's robotic endoskeleton is revealed underneath its synthetic skin.
At its core, The Terminator is a sci-fi action film with a simple premise. However, Cameron's direction, the performances of the cast, and the impressive visual effects elevate it to a classic of the genre. The film spawned multiple sequels and cemented Schwarzenegger's status as an action movie icon.
The Terminator is a 1984 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 48 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 8.1 and a MetaScore of 84.
