Final Girl is a 2015 American thriller film directed by Tyler Shields and starring Abigail Breslin, Wes Bentley, and Logan Huffman. The film is about a young girl named Veronica who is trained to be an assassin by a man named William. However, unbeknownst to her, William has ulterior motives for training her. The movie opens with a flashback of a young Veronica (played by Alisha Newton) witnessing her parents' murder. Fast forward to present day, Veronica is now a teenager and she meets William (played by Wes Bentley) in the forest. William sees potential in Veronica and begins to train her to become an assassin. He tells her that she is preparing for a mission to take down a group of boys who hunt and kill girls for fun. Veronica accepts the task and she is sent on a date with one of the boys, with the intention of seducing him and leading him to his death. The majority of the movie takes place in an abandoned warehouse where the boys have set up their hunting ground. Veronica shows up in a white dress and begins to outsmart the boys one by one. The boys are taken aback by Veronica's sudden appearance and her calm demeanor. However, as the night progresses, Veronica begins to uncover William's true intentions for training her. She comes to learn that William has been grooming her to be the final girl - the last victim standing in a twisted game of survival. The film is visually stunning, with Tyler Shields' background in photography and fashion design shining through in the striking cinematography and costumes. The use of slow-motion shots during the fight scenes adds to the film's stylish appeal. Abigail Breslin gives a strong performance as Veronica. She portrays the character as a stoic and emotionless assassin, yet there are moments where she shows vulnerability and fear. Wes Bentley is also compelling as William, playing the role of a manipulative and twisted mentor with ease. The film's storyline follows a familiar formula for the "final girl" trope, but it's the execution that sets Final Girl apart from other films in the genre. The pacing is slow-burning and the tension builds steadily, creating an unsettling and eerie atmosphere. The film's climax is especially satisfying, with Veronica unleashing her deadly skills in a final showdown against William. Final Girl may not be for everyone, as it's a violent and dark film that explores themes of manipulation and survival. However, for those who enjoy thrillers with a unique visual style, Final Girl is a must-watch.
