This comedy is based on the Jerome Lawrence/Robert E. Lee Broadway play. Its release coincided with the real-life election of Sandra Day O'Connor as the first female justice on the US Supreme Court. When conservative justice Ruth Loomis is appointed to fill the vacancy on the highest court in the land after Justice Stanley Moorehead dies, she finds her fellow Associate Justice Daniel Snow, a confirmed liberal, to be her exact opposite. They have differing viewpoints about every topic before the Court, from freedom of speech issues to defining exactly what about a film makes it pornographic.
