Two showgirls, Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorthy Shaw (Jane Russell) are the best of friends. They are part of the entertainment on a transatlantic cruise, working their way to Paris. Lorelei is engaged to marry Gus Esmond, and has a passion for diamonds. Their theme song is Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend. Gus's father is rich and keeps close tabs on his son. He is convinced that Lorelei is nothing but a gold digger. Dorothy is looking for love but the men have to be good-looking. Lorelei and Gus planned to get married once they reached Paris, but thanks to his father, cannot make the trip. The girls meet Piggy Beekman, a rich older gentlemen who is attracted to Lorelei and owns a diamond mine. Ernie Malone is a private detective hired by Gus's father to keep track of Lorelei. Dorothy knows who he is but soon they fall for each other. Malone is following Lorelei and snaps a picture that looks like Piggy and Lorelei are in a compromising position. Dorothy sees Malone taking the picture and come up with a plan to destroy the picture. They find a way to remove Malone's pants and steal the roll of film. Piggy is so grateful to Lorelei and Dorothy that he gives Lorelei his wife's diamond tiara. Lady Beekman discovers her tiara missing but Piggy does not tell her that he gave the tiara to Lorelei. Lorelei is charged with theft. The tiara is missing and they must find it. Piggy is at the airport trying to flee with the tiara, but Malone catches him before he can board a plane. Malone turns the tiara over to the court, saving Lorelei from being thrown in jail. Gus still wants to marry Lorelei. She tells Gus's father she is marrying Gus because she loves him and because of the old man's money. The film closes with a double wedding and a big musical number.
