El Dorado is about a gunslinger named Cole Thornton. A rancher named Bart Jason hires Cole as a way to gain an upper hand in a range war he wages against the McDonald Family. Cole arrives in the town of El Dorado to meet with his old friend, J.P. Harrah. J.P. is the local sheriff who informs Cole about Bart Jason and how Cole was hired to perhaps go against J.P. Cole decides not to work for Bart. Meanwhile the McDonalds are aware of Cole Thornton and fear a possible confrontation. Kevin McDonald recruits his youngest son, Luke, to stand guard of their property. Cole passes through the McDonald home after meeting with Bart. Luke wakes up to fire a warning shot at Cole, which Cole responds by shooting back. Cole approaches Luke and offers him help. Luke refuses and later kills himself. Cole brings back Luke's body to the ranch and explains to the family what happened. Joey McDonald, the only daughter of the family, rides off and shoots Cole in the back. The bullet is lodged near his spine, causing him constant trouble. After the local doctor failed to remove the bullet, Cole leaves El Dorado for a new job. A half-year later, Cole encounters Nelse McLeod. McLeod is hired by Bart Jason to do the same job Cole had refused earlier on. Cole also meets up with a greenhorn named Mississippi. Cole and Mississippi travel to El Dorado to meet up with a deputy sheriff named Bull to protect the McDonald's from Bart Jason. Cole tries to continuously sober up a constantly drunk J.P. in order to help fend off Bart and his crew, who harass and eventually kidnap one of the McDonalds. Bart demands the water rights be signed over to him. Later on, Cole and his friends attack the saloon where Bart and McLeod are hiding, resulting in Bart's demise.
