The partial fictionalized story of the life and war service of Alvin York. Alvin York was a man who started in very humble beginnings, and was able to overcome the obstacles to become one of the most celebrated American servicemen to fight in World War I. This film depicts Alvin as he suffers through his alcohol abuse. He ends up having a horrific accident and he gets struck by lightning during one of his drunken outings. This incident causes Alvin to turn to rethink things, and he turns to religion. He takes his newfound religion very seriously. Alvin claims himself to be a conscientious objector when he received his draft notice. He ends up refusing that and he joins the infantry. Alvin ends up serving with great valor. He captures a large number of Germans and saves the lives of many of his men who are caught under heavy fire.
