Starring William Powell and Carole Lombard, it is a classic black and white romantic comedy with a timeless message. Set during the Great Depression, Godfrey Parke (Powell) appears to be one of the many men down on their luck living at the city dump when one night a spoiled little rich girl Cornelia Bullock (Gail Patrick) offers Godfrey $5 to participate in a party scavenger hunt. She is unsuccessful and humiliated by Godfrey which delights her younger sister, Irene (Lombard). They strike up a friendship and he agrees to help her win to spite her sister Cornelia. Back at the Ritz Hotel and the party, the girl's father is not amused by the festivities, but is impressed when Godfrey makes a speech to the decadent crowd admonishing them for their antics. Embarrassed, Irene offers him a job as the family butler, however Godfrey isn’t expecting the cast of characters that await him in his new job as well as Cornelia’s undiminished ire. As life in the house unfolds it appears that Godfrey may be more than he claims, Cornelia is set on revenge and Irene desperately tries to “make something” of the man she’s falling for.
