Hard to Hold is a romantic drama musical that was written by Thomas Hedley Jr. and Richard Rothstein. Directed by Larry Peerce, the film features real life pop idol Rick Springfield, Janet Eilber, Patti Hansen and Albert Salmi. The story starts with James Roberts (played by Rick Springfield), a rock star who has just come off a performance at one of his concerts. He runs around in only a towel and earring. As a result, girls from the show are having a field day with this sight. While driving to the San Francisco Fairmont Hotel where he is staying, he smacks into another car. There is a lovely woman named Diana Lawson (played by Janet Eilber) driving that car who is totally unimpressed with him since she doesn't even know who he is. She's very unhappy about her car, but he is smitten right away with her. She is very beautiful and has an honest quality about her that he is partial to. Given that most of the women he meets know exactly who he is and that is what motivates them to pursue him to begin with, this is a refreshing experience. He is able to get her number so that he can see that her car is fixed. Once Diana gets home, she listens to some of his music and becomes interested, much to her own shock, and begins dancing around her office. The two begin to see each other and things seem to be going along well. However, Diana is growing restless and wants more of a commitment. James is well into his career, and it is actually bad for anyone to know he has a girlfriend. It would be bad for his image as a music sex symbol. Therefore, the two are faced with a quandary that neither one wants to confront. The inevitable happens, and a choice must be made in order to save the relationship.
