Julie is a Hindi romance, family and musical film that was written by Inder Raj Anand, Chakrapani, Pamman and Raj Baldev Raj. Directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan, the movie features Laxmi, Sridevi and Nadira. The story Julie (played by Laxmi) who has a loving, though alcoholic father (played by Om Prakash). As an Anglo Christian Indian, she also has an overbearing and controlling mother (played by Nadira). The family also includes a younger sister (played by Sridevi). Julie falls for her best friend's (played by Rita Bhaduri) brother, Shashi Bhattacharya (played by Vikram) who is Hindu. She has a romantic encounter with him after which she becomes pregnant. She does not tell him and he goes off to college. Her mother is devastated to hear about her pregnancy. Therefore, Julie and her mother do not tell the rest of the family about her condition. They entertain Julie having an abortion, however, a religious man (played by Ruby Myers) influences her not to do so, in accordance with his devout Christian beliefs. Julie goes away to secretly have her baby. The family is told that Julie is absent due to a new career opportunity. After the baby is born, the baby is left in an orphanage with the assistance of Julie's mother. Her mother insists that Julie return to their home and forget about the baby. Her father had died while she was away. As a result, Julie is the primary breadwinner in her family. She catches up with her boyfriend and informs about all that has happened. He wants to marry her, but both his and her mother do not believe Julie is suitable because she is of a different race. His mother insists that Julie seduced her son so that she could deliberately conceive the baby. The boyfriend's father (played by Utpal Dutt) convinces both mothers to abandon their prejudices regarding religion and caste and they offer their blessings to the marriage and baby.
