During World War II in France, the army’s 35th division pulls out on orders after an attack from the Germans. Private Kelly (Clint Eastwood), an officer demoted to private following an incident that was not entirely his fault, captures a German Intelligence officer with gold bars hidden in his rucksack. Kelly gets him drunk and the intelligence officer reveals where there is more hidden gold behind enemy lines. Kelly convinces some members of the platoon to join him in a heist to steal the gold. Their commanding officer doesn’t notice when most of his men agree to go along with Kelly’s plans. "Crapgame" (Don Rickles), a crafty supply SSgt, and “Oddball" (Donald Sutherland), a laid back, hippy tank commander get in on the scheme. While crossing into enemy territory in the opposite direction of the retreating Allies, Kelly’s men meet the opposition head on, fighting their way through enemy troops. General Colt, head of the allied troops mistake the group for heroes fighting for their country and becomes their biggest supporter. Kelly and his group are becoming reluctant heroes.
