Directed by Ralkumar Santoshi, Lajja is a Hindi film that is based on how women in India are treated. Lajja has some of the best Hindi actors and actresses including: Rekha (Ramdulaari), Manisha Koirala (Vaidehi), Mahima Chaudhary (Maithali) and Jaya Bhattacharya (Lata). The movie is based around the lives of four women who are ill-treated in India and who bravely try to make a world for themselves despite the view of women in India. The movie starts out with Vaidehi (Koirala) standing up for herself against her husband Raghu. In outward appearances Vaidehi lives a very nice life, but inwardly the truth is that her husband is abusive and cheats on her regularly. While his wife is on the run, Raghu is injured in a car accident which renders him unable to father a child. When he is told that Vaidehi is pregnant he fakes remorse for ill-treating her and asks her to come home. Having no place to go, Vaidehi choses to hope that Raghu has changed his ways and decides to return home. However, Raghu has not changed his ways but rather has become more cold hearted and he and his father plot to take Vaidehi’s child and make him their heir. Fearing for her life and the life of her child, Vaidehi runs from Raghu’s henchmen and is helped by a kind-hearted thief called (Raju). He hears of her story, hides her from the henchmen, and then gives her money. The movie shows how Vaidehi meets four women: Maithili, a woman who is almost forced in marriage with a man she hates. Lata, a woman whose husband, Puroshottam a theater director, keeps her confined to their house while he lusts after other women. Janki, an actress who is in love with her co-star and who has a miscarriage after the audience assaults her. Finally, is Ramdularri a mid-wife who, with the help of her educated son Bhulva, challenges the village leaders. She is later murdered when the leaders, force her and then burn her alive.
