Cherry-picked highlights of the world’s oldest, and most prestigious, sports car endurance race. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is internationally recognised as one of the biggest challenges in the motorsports world. 24 hours of continuous racing means the event is as demanding on drivers as it is on their cars and the rate of failure is always high. 2012’s race saw Audi continue their dominance of the premier LMP1 class in the face of a challenge from Toyota. Would 2013 see the Japanese overturn the might of the R18 e-tron Quattro with their TS030 hybrids? The result came down to the wire with mechanical problems, safety cars and horrendous weather all playing their part in pushing the drama all the way to the finish line. In the other prototype class, LMP2, there was just as much excitement as French team OAK Racing sought to chalk up a home victory. Meanwhile, in the GT categories a battle royale was developing between Le Mans legends Porsche and Aston Martin. The two prestigious marques are steeped in the history and mythology of the Le Sarthe circuit and the teams would not give an inch in their pursuit of another class win. The most exciting and closest race in recent years was sadly over-shadowed by the death of popular Danish driver Allan Simonsen. The race was continued at the request of his family. These highlights are dedicated to his memory.
