Luz is a 2018 supernatural horror film directed by Tilman Singer. The film follows a young cab driver named Luz, who walks into a police station, in a state of shock, where she demands the attention of a detective named Rossini. However, the detective thinks that Luz's strange behavior is a result of her being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and after he interrogates her, he realizes that her situation is more terrifying than he initially assumed.

The film takes place in Germany and mostly transpires in a dingy police station, with hints of flashbacks and eerie scenes shot in dark alleyways. The cinematography does a great job of providing a claustrophobic feel and helps build tension. The film's score, which is reminiscent of 80s synthwave music, adds an extra layer of creepiness to the story.

As the story progresses, we get hints of something paranormal about Luz. She claims to be possessed by an entity, and we see flashbacks of her nights working as a cab driver, where she picked up a strange passenger. The film does an excellent job of not revealing too much early on so that the audience has no idea what is happening. It leaves the audience on edge, trying to decipher the clues presented in each scene.

Johannes Benecke performs well as the detective interrogating Luz. He brings a sense of gravitas to the role and genuinely seems to be trying to figure out what is going on with Luz. The character's interactions with other people in the station also depict that something unusual is happening. The actresses behind the desk seem nervous when he asks Luz questions, and the janitor is afraid when he hears strange noises in the background.

Luana Velis did an excellent job of playing Luz. She manages to convey the character's fragility and sense of being overwhelmed. The way she delivers lines in the film makes the audience unsure whether she is possessed by an entity or just a victim of a foul play. As the plot from the past catches up to the present, Luz's character becomes more unhinged and results in a few brutal scenes that showcase Velis's ability to convey that her character is no longer in control.

Overall, the horror in Luz is psychological rather than physical. The film is not excessively gory but is more about psychological scares, and it does a great job in this regard. The climax of the film is both gruesome and satisfying, bringing to light everything that has happened so far. It is also at this point that some answers are given, and the audience can finally understand what is happening. The conclusion does not leave viewers with a feel-good feeling, which is fitting for a horror film.

In conclusion, Luz is an exceptional horror film that offers a fantastic story and has excellent cinematography and a score. It is easy to get immersed in the world the film presents and helps to keep the audience's attention with its sense of creepiness. Tilman Singer is a director that proves he is one to watch in the horror genre.
