The Bridges are a Kansas, Missouri family in the 1930s and 1940s. Mr. Bridges, a lawyer, finds himself debating with his children over his conservative values versus his children's more liberal ones. His teenage daughter believes in equal rights for women. She doesn’t want to keep house while her husband goes to work and earns the promotions. Another daughter tries to have a marriage like her parents’, but she is married to a physically abusive husband. Their son signs up to join the army air corps, before his drafted, against his father's wishes. Their mother wants to try therapy.
