A western film released in 1967, Hombre is based on the novel by the same name by Elmore Leonard. The film was directed by Martin Ritt and starred Paul Newman. Set in late 19th-century Arizona, John Russell (played by Newman, returns to the while world after being raised Apache. He faces prejudice when he returns for the inheritance left by his father. Russell winds up paired up with a boarding house caretaker, Jesse, and two of the boarders. Three others join them, when Indian agent Professor Alexander Favor, finds out Russell is Indian he starts treating him as second-class and asks him to ride up front instead of in the stagecoach with the rest of the group. When the stagecoach is robbed and Mrs. Favor, a woman in the group, the group must battle a sheriff-gone-bad, ex-lover of Jessie's and outlaws. Russell uses his Indian instincts to protect the group.
