'The Molly Maguires' is a serious movie delivering a message concerning social justice. Inspired by a true story, 'The Molly Maguires' tells the story of a secret society of coal miners and their struggle against oppression and a corrupt mine owners. The Molly Maguires were an 1800's era secret society of Irish mine workers that uses explosives and other dangerous tactics to sabotage the operations of the mines they work in. In response, the mining company hires private undercover detective James McParland (Richard Harris) to infiltrate the Molly Maguires to expose the crimes committed by the most active troublemakers, and bring them to justice. Things are not always so black and white in this film. Throughout, McParlan's loyalty to his employer are severely tested again and again. He has a choice: Join the Maguires, or stay with his mission to bring the suspected terrorists to justice. The central character in this film is Jack Kehoe, the leader of The Molly Maguires and is played by the actor Sean Connery. Kehoe is a working class immigrant from Ireland who works his way up within the secret organization. The plot of the film has Connery's character doing psychological battle with the detective who betrays the friendship of one of the men he was sent to spy on, and competes with Kehoe for the attention of one of the local women. Midway through the film Jack Kehoe manages to intentionally injure his own his hand in order to win some time off from work to date the woman. Life is difficult for those who Work deep in the coal mines of late 1800's Pennsylvania. One group of men -- the Molly Maguires fights back against the corrupt organization that oppresses them using murder and sabotage. One detective, an Irish emigrant himself would in other circumstances belong to the Molly Maguires is hired by the company to stop them. In the end, he take a stand and choose sides.
