First Knight, released in 1995 and directed by Jerry Zucker stars Sean Connery as the legendary King Arthur, Julia Ormond as the brave Lady Guinevere, Richard Gere as the fearless Lancelot and Ben Cross as the malicious Sir Malagant. Contrary to most films based on the Legend of King Arthur, this film doesn’t feature Merlin or Excalibur; instead it highlights the struggle of King Arthur to protect the kingdom of Camelot from the villainous Sir Malagant and shows the inner struggle of Lady Guinevere between her duty to King Arthur and her love for Sir Lancelot. Rated PG-13, the whole family can embark on this medieval journey. Unencumbered by a family or home, Lancelot lives by the sword. Money is his guide and motive to fight as he roams throughout the realm, trying to make a way for himself. On her way to marry King Arthur, Lady Guinevere’s caravan is ambushed by the rogue Sir Malagant; thankfully Lancelot is nearby to come to her aide. Its love at first sight for Lancelot but Guinevere is determined to honor her commitment to King Arthur and to align their kingdoms. Fearing more attacks on her people, Guinevere seeks the protection King Arthur can provide, protection that will be accomplished through their marriage. Lancelot is not so easily dissuaded by Guinevere’s rejection. Determined to stay close to Guinevere and to try to sway her decision to marry Arthur, Lancelot enters King Arthur’s inner circle, becoming one of his trusted knights. The love triangle grows deeper and more complicated as time passes and war between Arthur and Malagant for the kingdom of Camelot comes to a boiling point. Now Lancelot is torn between his love for Guinevere and his new found allegiance to the King he fights so diligently for.
