Mulan 2 occurs shortly after the conclusion of the previous film, opening with General Shang asking Mulan to become his wife. While Mulan accepts and Mushu is initially elated at the news, Mulan's ancestors inform him that Mulan's marriage would end his need to serve as a guardian. Mulan would become a Shang and thus, watched over by his family's ancestor spirit and thus motivating Mushu to ruin their wedding plans. Elsewhere, the Emperor asks Mulan and Shang to guide his three daughters, Mei, Ting-Ting, and Su across China for political marriages among the kingdom of Qui Gong. Failing to do so within seventy-two hours will ruin the proposed alliance, leaving China defenseless against the Mongol hordes. Mulan's friends, Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po, join Shang and Mulan on the escort mission. While on this journey, Mushu's plans shed light on the three princesses displeased with their arranged marriages; that each loves one of Mulan's friends. Mulan decides to ignore her orders, stopping by a village for the guys to impress the princesses. Elsewhere, Mushu manages to get Shang to think that Mulan is taking advantage of the general. The trip then passes through bandit territory, causing Mushu to panic for Mulan's life and explain his plans to her. She takes the news well and tries to explain things to Shang right as bandits strike. The ensuing skirmish leaves the princess safe, but the bridge the group was crossing breaks, leaving Shang and Mulan hanging on for dear life. With the rope only able to hold one person, Shang lets go of Mulan's hand and falls in the river, allowing Mulan the chance to climb to safety. Mulan soldiers on to Qui Gong, offering herself to be married in order to save the princesses. Mushu assists by posing as a spirit of unity, forcing the ruler of Qi Gong to end the originally planned arranged marriages.
