In the small town of Palmyra, Tennessee, the peace is shattered when a local pastor's wife is brutally murdered. The investigation is led by Deputy Sam MacKenzie (Keith Carradine), a charming and dedicated officer with a troubled past. As he delves deeper into the case, he discovers a tangled web of secrets and lies that lead him to suspect the very people he had once trusted.

The prime suspect is the Pastor himself, his wife's husband, Tom Bird (John Glover). But the evidence against him is circumstantial, and Sam is not convinced of his guilt. He also learns that the Pastor's daughter, Candy Morrison (JoBeth Williams) has a troubled history with her stepmother and could have had a motive for the murder. Candy is also the victim's closest friend.

As Sam tries to piece together the puzzle, he faces opposition from both the townsfolk and the Pastor. The townsfolk resent his intrusion and believe that the local law enforcement can handle the case. The Pastor, on the other hand, is more interested in saving his own reputation than in helping with the investigation.

As events unfold, Sam begins to uncover a sordid affair between the Pastor's wife and a local contractor, Zack Willard (Terry Kinney); his wife and Pastor's wife had been friends since childhood. He also discovers that the Pastor has a dark past that he has been hiding from the congregation. Sam is relentlessly pressured to wrap up the investigation quickly so that the community can find closure, but he feels that the case is far from over.

The suspense builds up as the investigation reaches its climax, with a surprising twist that will make even the most experienced viewer sit up in shock.

Keith Carradine delivers an amazing performance as Deputy Sam MacKenzie, bringing just the right mix of vulnerability and strength to his character. JoBeth Williams is also convincing as Candy Morrison, the victim's closest friend and the prime suspect's daughter, balancing fragile emotions with steely determination. Kathy Bates makes a memorable appearance as the quirky newspaper editor, Bobbi Ann Mason.

The movie's pacing is excellent, with a tight script that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. The small-town setting adds an extra layer of tension, as Sam navigates the murky waters of local politics and community dynamics to solve the case.

Overall, Murder Ordained is a must-watch for fans of crime thrillers and murder mysteries. With its stellar cast, solid script, and suspenseful plot, it remains a classic of the genre even after over three decades.
