Muriel's Wedding is a light-hearted Australian comedy about an eccentric young woman who longs to escape her life of drudgery in the tiny Australian town of Porpoise Spit. The sleeper hit was directed by P.J. Hogan, and Toni Colette received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Muriel Heslop is a socially inept overweight young woman, who loves ABBA and dreams of finding the perfect man. Often finding herself the subject of ridicule by the local mean girls, or her verbally abusive, politician father Bill (Bill Hunter), Muriel yearns for marriage and a life worth living. To make matters worse, Muriel lives at home with her slacker siblings and meek, timid mother, who idolizes her father. Muriel's friend Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths) is the only bright spot in her life. Rhonda is also a dreamer, but unlike Muriel, she is wild, hedonistic, and loves to take chances. Against her better judgment, Muriel steals money from her father to go an excursion to Sydney with Rhonda. The trip is cut short when it is discovered that Rhonda has a spinal tumor, which leaves her wheelchair bound. Muriel finds herself in a marriage of convenience with a handsome South African swimmer David Van Arkle (Daniel Lapaine) who needs an Australian visa. During the wedding, Muriel has a falling out with Rhonda. David initially views Muriel as repulsive but, they begin to grow close after the untimely death of her mother. Muriel decides to leave David after she has a moment of self discovery and realizes that being married doesn't necessarily equate to happiness. Muriel yearns for more and is now more than ever determined to take a chance. Muriel goes to Rhonda's house to ask her to go to Sydney. At first reluctant, Rhonda decides to take Muriel up on her offer to leave Porpoise Spit. They hop in a cab and make their way out of town as Dancing Queen plays.
