My Name is Bill W. is a 1989 made-for-TV movie that originally aired as part of CBS' Hallmark Hall of Fame series. It stars James Woods as a stockbroker whose career is decimated by the great stock-market crash of 1929. As he descends into alcoholism, he meets Dr. Robert Holbrook Smith, played by James Garner, and together the pair create a support group that would eventual become the predecessor of Alcoholics Anonymous. The film was written by William Borchert and was directed by Daniel Petrie. In addition to Woods and Garner, it features performances by JoBeth Williams and Gary Sinise.
