Our Song is about three teenage best friends Joycelyn, Maria, and Lanisha. Living in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights, they experience a summer filled with family issues, love, morals and following their dreams. The three are members of a marching band known as the Jackie Robinson Steppers. They attend rehearsals daily in a neighborhood parking lot in preparation for the annual Labor Day parade. Their common goal is to be the best at their respected instruments in order to stand out for their conductor. The three girls work over the summer. Maria and Lanisha work at a bakery while Joycelyn has a job as a clerk at a makeup boutique. The girls talk about their futures after high school. However, at age 15, Maria becomes pregnant by Terrell. She wants to have the baby, knowing that Terrell may not be of any help. Maria’s parents are unaware of her pregnancy. Joycelyn dreams of becoming a singer and takes up poetry writing. While she remains close with Maria and Lanisha, she makes new friends outside of their neighborhood. At the same time, she is trying to spend time with her mother despite receiving nearly little to no support. Though her parents are divorced, Lanisha visits her father, who works as a doorman in an apartment building. After a friend commits suicide, Lanisha is consoled by her mother. Lanisha also faces life after experiencing a breakup with her boyfriend. As the summer slowly comes to an end, the three girls who were close from the start began to drift apart. They learn that their school would not open due to an issue with asbestos. The girls are forced to find new schools, leading to new changes in their daily lives including commutes to and from school. Regardless, they remain close friends and continue to rehearse with their band.
