- 2015
Peregrine's Home for Peculiars is a 2016 American fantasy adventure film directed by Tim Burton and based on the novel of the same name by Ransom Riggs. The film follows a young boy named Jake Portman (Asa Butterfield) who discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times. Along the way, he uncovers a secret refuge known as "Peregrine's Home for Peculiars," where he meets peculiar children with extraordinary abilities and dangerous enemies.
The story begins with Jake as a young boy being told fantastical stories about his grandfather's adventures during World War II. His grandfather, Abe (Terrence Stamp), used to tell him about a group of peculiar children he lived with on an island in Wales during the war. The stories included a girl who could control fire, a boy who was invisible, and a girl with incredible strength.
Years later, Jake, now a teenager, starts to experience strange nightmares and visions of monsters. He is drawn to the stories his grandfather told him as a child and decides to visit the island where the peculiar children lived. When he arrives, he discovers that the home has been destroyed, and the children are believed to be dead.
However, Jake soon discovers a time loop that takes him back to the 1940s, where he meets Miss Peregrine (Eva Green), an Ymbryne who can manipulate time and turn into a bird. She takes him to the home for peculiar children, which is hidden in a time loop on September 3, 1943, days before it was destroyed by a German bomb.
Jake meets the children and learns that they each have their own unique power or peculiarities. Emma (Ella Purnell) can manipulate air, Olive (Lauren McCrostie) has the power of levitation, Horace (Hayden Keeler-Stone) can project his dreams onto a screen, and Millard (Cameron King) is invisible. These children are being hunted by Hollowgasts, creatures that were once peculiar but have now turned into monsters.
As Jake gets to know the peculiar children, they begin to realize that he has a special ability too - the power to see and protect them from their enemies. Together, they work to stop the evil Baron (Samuel L. Jackson) and his army of Hollowgasts from destroying the home and capturing Miss Peregrine.
The film is a visually stunning adventure that combines elements of fantasy, time travel, and horror. Tim Burton's signature style is evident in the film's dark and quirky tone, with stunning cinematography and special effects. The talented cast brings their characters to life with great performances, making it easy to become invested in their stories.
Overall, Peregrine's Home for Peculiars is a captivating and imaginative film that offers a unique take on the adventure genre. The film is filled with magic, action, and heart, making it an enjoyable watch for audiences of all ages.
