At the height of the British Invasion, British radio only played 30 minutes of rock music a day, which was not nearly enough. To meet the growing demand, a pirate radio station broadcast rock music 24/7 from a boat anchored in international waters. The music mariners are relentlessly pursued by the hidebound, tightly wound Sir Alistair Dormandy who is determined to sink that flotilla of drug takers and lawbreakers bent on destroying a once-great nation.

On board, the boat features a hodgepodge of individualistic and insane characters from the prima donna star DJ, ‘The Count,’ to the lesbian cook, Felicity. Young Carl, nephew of boat owner Quintin, is dropped into this cacophony of personalities. The movie chronicles Carl’s journey to adulthood including love found, lost and possibly found again. This familiar transformation is complicated by the insane antics of the DJs just trying to keep rock and roll alive.

Pirate Radio features an all-star cast of British and American actors including Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Tom Sturridge, Jack Davenport, Rhys Ifans, Bill Nighy and the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman as ‘The Count’.
