Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his brother Hank (Ethan Hawke) are both in desperate need of money. Andy has embezzled money from his employer, for drugs, and needs to repay it immediately because his company is undergoing an audit. Hank needs to pay child support or his ex (Amy Ryan) will cut him out of his daughter’s life. Commiserating over their predicaments, Andy presents Hank with a plan to rob their parent’s jewelry store. He talks Hank into the robbery by assuring him that no one will be hurt, no real guns will be used and that their parents won’t even be at the store, reminding him it would be the older lady that works for them. And, the real benefit will be that their parents won’t be at risk, because their insurance will pay for the stolen items. Hank hires Bobby (Brian F. O’Byrne) to pull off the robbery while Hank waits in the car. When Bobby enters the store, it turns out that it is Nanette (Rosemary Harris), Andy and Hank’s mother, in the store. For protection from what she assumes is a real threat, Nanette pulls a gun from under the counter and a shootout ensues leaving Bobby dead and Nanette critically injured. Nanette dies and their father (Albert Finney) becomes obsessed with finding the thief’s partner, the driver. Hank and Andy are frantically trying to cover up their trail, and Hank wrestles with his conscience. As things begin to unravel, Andy discovers that Hank has been having an affair with his wife (Marisa Tomei). Without the money that they need, Andy decides to rob his own drug dealer and ends up murdering him and one of his clients, thus ensuing additional cover-ups. Things continue to go downhill for the brothers and eventually they wind up in a face-off, both unaware that their father is hot on their trail and has discovered his sons’ ultimate betrayal.
