Great Expectations is a dramatic romance film that was released in 1998. It was written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron. The film stars Ethan Hawke as Finnegan Bell, and Gwyneth Paltrow as Estella. The supporting cast consists of Robert De Niro, Chris Cooper, Hank Azaria, and Anne Bancroft. Its running time is 111 minutes, and it was produced by Art Linson Productions. The film received an R rating for its language, and its sexual content. The movie begins with a young Finnegan playing on the beach. Out of nowhere, a man in shackles pops out of the water. He demands that Finnegan get him something to eat, some medicine, and something to cut off his shackles. Finnegan goes and gets all this, but when he comes back the convict makes him take a small boat with him to help him get to Mexico. Before they get far they are stopped. The convict disappears, while Finnegan is brought back home. Later on, Finnegan sees on the news that the man is a mobster named Arthur, who is now caught again. Now, Arthur is expected to be executed even sooner than he was before. Soon after, Finnegan goes with his Uncle to a rich ladies house. This is where he meets Estella who makes him dance for her and has him draw for her too. Finnegan is warned that he will get his heart broken if he allows himself to fall for her. Over the next few years, Finnegan continues to go over to Estella's house and learn to dance. As he is older, he really falls for her, but she unexpectedly leaves the country. She is gone for years. Finnegan forgets about her, until his feelings are reinstated as soon as he sees her at an art exhibit. The rest of the movie is about Finnegan dealing with the start-and-stop way Estella treats their relationship.
