'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' is a "diesel punk" style sci-fi adventure film about a future that happens to be set in the past. The story of 'Sky Captain' is about the lives of a few central characters reacting to a massive invasion of New York by an army of flying robot monsters. The main characters include Polly Perkins, a classic to the period female newspaper reporter played by Gwyneth Paltrow, Harry Joseph ‘Joe’ Sullivan as the Sky Captain (Jude Law), and the actor Giovanni Ribisi playing 'Dex Dearborn', Sky Captain's trusted sidekick. 'Sky Captain' is one of the first Hollywood films to be produced using live actors on film against computer-generated scenery. The film opens with the airship Hindenburg III docking at the top of the Empire State Building. A scientist, Dr. Vargas who arrived on the ship to deliver a package disappears. The incident attracts the attention of newspaper reporter Polly Perkins who meets with another scientist in a movie theater to question him about still other missing scientists. An air raid siren interrupts the show with a warning that the city is under seige by destructive flying robots. The authorities summon Sky Captain who flies vintage-looking aircraft and shoots at the robots. Soon, the attack is over, and the damage is minimal, but the mystery remains. Sky Captain returns to his base to confer with Dex his sidekick and technology expert. Polly is invited back to the base by Dex who does not know that Sky Captain and Polly have a past. The plot leads the film's characters to a remote location near Nepal. There, animals are being loaded onto space ships. Dex has concluded that the original 'missing' scientist has actually been developing a plan to destroy mankind while rescuing earth’s animals by shipping them elsewhere. The future -- the "world of tomorrow", was meant to be an altogether new world without man.
