Based on the radio character voiced in the 1930s by Orson Welles, The Shadow tells the story of an American called Lamont Cranston, who is told a Tibetan priest he will become a good man instead of his current role as a crime boss. Remaining in Tibet for a short period of time, The Shadow learns the abilities of telepathy and how to bend the will of mortal men to do his bidding.

Returning to New York in a bid to overcome the evil that is taking control of the World, Cranston meets Margot Lane, who has telepathic powers as a natural ability. The pair form a romantic connection that Cranston breaks off as his own telepathic abilities are affected negatively by the relationship. The Shadow then meets his nemesis, Shiwan Khan, the last surviving descendant of Genghis Khan who plans to dominate the world in the way his famous ancestor planned centuries earlier. Khan has similar skills to The Shadow as he was also trained by Tibetan priests, but returned to the forces of evil after his return to New York. The Shadow must now rescue Margot from the clutches of Khan and save the world from his potential domination.
