Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was the first movie based off of the popular video game series of the same name. The movie is an animated feature most noted for its photo-realistic style. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within opened to a mixed critical reception and is considered a box office bomb. The narrative of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within begins in the year 2065 and follows Dr. Aki Ross and her team of scientists and soldiers as they attempt to investigate an alien invasion of Earth. These aliens, known as phantoms, have forced the humans that survived the initial invasion into barrier cities that the phantoms cannot penetrate. Dr. Ross is seeking for a way to negate the energy of the phantoms by collecting the eight spirit signatures that can nullify the Phantoms. In contrast to the relatively peaceful method used by Dr. Ross, a character by the name of General Hein wants to wipe out the phantoms using a space weapon called the Zeus Cannon. Use of the cannon carries certain risks and consequences that could pose a danger to the barrier cities. The ruling council of General Hein's barrier city prefers to wait to use the cannon until Dr. Ross has collected the eight spirit signature. The movie's central narrative conflict centers around Dr. Ross and her team' race to gather the eight required spirits before General Hein can convince the ruling council to let him fire the Zeus Cannon. Square Pictures spent four years using advanced animation technology to create the character of Aki Ross. Square's goal was to produce the world's first photo-realistic computer animated actress. The entire animated model of Aki Ross consisted of around 400,000 polygons. Notably, each of the model's 60,000 hairs was separately rendered. The company's eventual goal was to have Aki Ross appear in many different roles over several different films. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is the most expensive video game inspired ever produced. The final cost of the film was $137 million. The film utilizes the voice talents of Ming-Na, Alec Baldwin, Donald Sutherland, James Woods, Ving Rhames, Peri Gilpin, and Steve Buscemi.
