"Evil comes in all sizes!"

The film Puppet Master, which was released in 1989, is a classic of the evil doll or puppet genre. Puppet Master was written by Charles Band and Kenneth J. Hall, and directed by David Schmoeller. The plot revolves around living puppets, who have come to life after their creator, the puppet master André Toulon, discovers a life-giving Egyptian elixir and seeking greatness in his craft, gives it to his puppets, thus bestowing eternal life to them. Enter the Nazis, fans of both all things evil and eternal, who have learned of this experiment and are determined to get the secret from Toulon. The puppet master cheats the Nazis by putting a gun to his mouth and pulling the trigger. He may play with things that should not ever never be brought to life, but let it not be said that André Toulon, puppet master extraordinaire, is a willing pawn of the Aryan Nation. No, with a single bullet Toulon changes the whole game: puppet master one, Nazis zero.

Fifty years go by, as time will do, until one fateful day the psychic Neil Gallagher summons four of his know-all psychic peers to a Bodega Bay hotel. There, the psychics discover that Neil was dead when he sent out his call, that his intentions were nefarious, and that he leaves behind a window, and his animated corpse as he imbibed the Egyptian potion before committing suicide, not to mention the malignant and dangerous living puppets who are named, respectively, Blade, Jester, Leech Woman, Pin Head, and Tunneler, and who have an impressive if bizarre set of dangerous talents, skills, and abilities which they are hell-bent on deploying, much to the detriment of the hapless psychics. Although one might be tempted to imagine that the psychics would have foreseen the danger that lies before them in the Bodega Bay Hotel, it is apparent that they do not -- and thus themselves become puppets of fate.

The Puppet Master, with its ingredients of murder, mayhem, suicide, danger, intrigue, sensual dalliances, animated corpses, and maniacal marionettes who have their strings pulled by an evil force, and with its air of general quirkiness, was the beginning of a cinematic empire, a living doll dynasty, a generator of malignant marionettes. In short, other Puppet Master films soon followed, as if they too had drank from the cup of immortality.
