Sons and Lovers is a 1960 British film adaptation of the D. H, Lawrence novel. It is set in the first part of the 20th century. Lawrence’s novel was published in 1913. The story is about a young man named Paul growing up in a English coal-mining town. He has a desire to become a writer. His mother Gertrude is dominating and manipulative. She is trapped in an unhappy marriage, and transfers all her hope for happiness to her son. She is very jealous and interferes with all of Paul’s relationships with women. Paul moves to the city and becomes involved with a liberated feminist named Mrs. Clara Dawes.
