Summer Catch is a romantic comedy that tells the story of baseball player Ryan Dunne (played by Freddie Prinze, Jr.). Ryan finally gets his chance for a Major League Baseball career when he earns a spot on the Minor League Baseball team the Chatham Athletics. Ryan's determined to make it to the big leagues, even though he has a number of hurdles in his way. One of the main obstacles Ryan faces is the fact that he didn't play college ball like his teammates. In addition, Ryan and his family are poor and Ryan is forced to spend his days working for his dad's (played by Fred Ward) landscape business, while the other players rest or practice. Ryan's humble roots make him a target for some of the other players on the team, like Eric Van Leemer (played by Corey Pearson, who believe Ryan's not worthy of his spot on the team. With the help of his friends, including Billy Brubaker (played by Matthew Lillard)and Miles Dalrymple (played by Marc Blucas), Ryan's able to prove his baseball skills to all the naysayers though. Ryan faces one more obstacle, a new romance with rich girl Tenley Parrish (played by Jessica Biel) who is on summer vacation with her family. After Ryan and Tenley fall in love, Ryan begins to pay more attention to her then the game, a fact that irritates both his family and teammates. Ryan's father and brother Mike (played by Jason Gedrick) strongly encourage Ryan to break it off with Tenley so he doesn't ruin his chances for a professional baseball career. Ryan reluctantly agrees with his family and friends and breaks it off with Tenley. Ryan soon realizes though that he can have both a baseball career and a girlfriend. Tenley takes him back and in the end Ryan ends up with not only the girl, but a chance to play in the Major Leagues.
