“Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” is the follow up to the first successful feature film about the famous cartoon dog. This film follows the adventures of Shaggy, Scooby, and the rest of the Mystery Machine team as they embark on a second journey filled with ghosts, spirits, and other assorted dark creatures. Following the typical Scooby mystique, nothing is every exactly what it seems when the Coolsville team gets together to investigate an unsolved case. The sequel kicks off at a museum dedication where the costumes and characters the team has unraveled over the years play a central role. Upon the beginning of the ceremony, a pterodactyl mysteriously comes to life to cause a certain amount of chaos. While the gang believes that the flying monsters is really just an ornate costume, it turns out that someone has figured out how to make the monsters the group has faced over the years real. Immediately, Mystery Inc. sets out to solve the case to get the museum back in order and the nerves of the Coolsville residents calmed down. However, the group sets its sights on a few suspects, which generally leads to small hints of who the actual bad guy is. After several wrong guesses, the team finally hits the trail of the real villain only to be captured with the exception of Scooby. Another storyline is also playing out at the same time as the mystery, and it concerns Shaggy and Scooby’s desire to be taken seriously as heroes of the Mystery Inc. team. In typical movie fashion, since everybody’s favorite Great Dane is left without his human companions, the stage is set for Scooby to redeem himself in the eyes of his companions. “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” is primarily a comedy featuring many visual gags of the computer animated pooch. The humor and laughs are primarily aimed at the young and young at heart, but the film also explores Scooby and Shaggy’s desires to become better respected among their peers. The monsters and characters are over-the-top and larger-than-life, which is exactly what anyone viewing a film based on a cartoon character would expect. The colorful visuals and innovative gags work in conjunction with the storyline to produce a feel good film with more than a few laugh out loud moments. The movie allows parents to spend some time with old friends, and allows the kids to discover some new ones.
