Swept from the Sea

Swept from the Sea is a 1998 drama based on the short story "Amy Foster." The movie is directed by Beeban Kidron and stars Vincent Perez and Rachel Weisz. The movie takes place in England where a Ukrainian peasant washes up on the shore after a boat crash. The peasant Yanko is found by a girl named Amy who was visiting her parents despite the fact that she receives little care or love from them. Amy nurses Yanko back to health at which point he is taken for slave labor until a doctor notices the man has intelligence after watching him play chess. The doctor assumes that Yanko is Russian and takes him in, where Yanko starts to receive payment for his services. While under the care of the doctor Yanko is also taught English. When the feelings that Yanko and Amy have for one another are revealed they get discouraged by everyone. However both still spend time together despite the fact that it is looked down upon.
