The Butter Battle is an animated television film produced by Dr. Seuss Productions in 1989. It is based on the book of the same title by Dr. Seuss, which was published in 1984. The movie tells a satirical story about the arms race and how it could lead to a nuclear war that would destroy the world. The story takes place in a divided land where the Yooks live on one side of a wall, and the Zooks live on the other side. The two groups have a long history of conflict but have managed to coexist peacefully for some time. However, tensions rise when a young Yook boy named Van Itch discovers a new weapon that his society has developed- the "Triple-Sling Jigger."

The Triple-Sling Jigger is a machine that can launch a buttered toast slice across the wall and onto the Zooks' side. Van Itch is excited about the invention and wants to use it to escalate the conflict with the Zooks. He goes to the wall and meets a Zook named Van Utter, who also has a similar weapon that can launch toast slices towards the Yooks. The two Van's engage in a heated debate about who has a better weapon until they are interrupted by their respective leaders.

The Yook leader, Grandpa, and the Zook leader, Dike, arrive at the wall and confront each other. They both claim that their society's weapon is superior and that they are ready to use it if necessary. Grandpa orders Van Itch to launch a toast at the Zooks as a show of force, but Van Itch hesitates. Meanwhile, Dike orders Van Utter to retaliate, but he also hesitates. The two leaders eventually decide to escalate the conflict by building more deadly weapons that can launch ever more buttered toast slices.

As the conflict grows, both sides develop ever more sophisticated weapons that have bizarre, fantastical features. The Yooks create a "Crunch-O-Matic," which can break the Zooks' toast slices into crumbs. The Zooks create a "Jigger-Rock Snatchem," which can capture the Yooks' toast slices mid-air. Grandpa and Dike both refuse to back down, and the situation seems hopeless.

The situation comes to a head when a young Zook girl named Van Der Wank arrives at the wall and demands to know why the two sides are fighting. She is horrified to see that the conflict is over something as trivial as toast and demands that they stop it at once. However, her pleas fall on deaf ears, and she leaves in disgust.

The movie ends with both societies teetering on the brink of nuclear war. As the two sides prepare to launch their most devastating weapons yet, the viewer is left to ponder whether the world will be destroyed over something as meaningless as buttered toast.

The Butter Battle is a powerful anti-war movie that uses humor and satire to convey a serious message. The film's animation is bright, colorful, and filled with surreal imagery that is typical of Dr. Seuss's work. The voices of the characters, which are provided by famous actors such as Charles Durning and Christopher Collins, add depth and humor to their roles.

Overall, The Butter Battle is a must-see movie for anyone who is interested in the dangers of the arms race and the threat of nuclear war. It is a timeless classic that still resonates with audiences today, more than 30 years after it was first released.

The Butter Battle is a 1978 family movie with a runtime of 22 minutes.
