The Competition is a 1980 film that stars Richard Dreyfuss and Amy Irving. Nominated for two Academy Awards, one Golden globe and one Raspberry Award, this film tells the story of a concert pianist named Paul. Paul has become disillusioned with the world of music while facing a very ill father at home, a job teaching music and the age limit for competing in a prestigious contest. One day, when he was watching his friend teach a piano class, he decides to compete one last time in an international piano competition that takes place in San Francisco.

While competing in San Francisco, he meets another competitor, Heidi, played by Amy Irving, whom he met at a music festival. Paul and Heidi make it to the final round along with four other talented musicians. While preparing for the final round, one of the competitors' teachers decided to defect to the United States from Russia without the knowledge of her young student. Due to the incident and the finals scheduled a week later, Paul and Heidi's romance blossoms to the disapproval of Heidi's teacher.
