The Dark is a psychological horror movie that was released in 1993. This film is about a man named Paul Kelly, played by Stephen McHattie, who is a government-sponsored researcher who runs experiments on individuals to test their ability to withstand stress. In one such experiment, Kelly exposes himself to an experimental drug that causes him to lose touch with reality, and have a mind-altering experience which leaves him questioning his own sanity.

The movie begins with a violent and bizarre scene in which Kelly participates in a highly disturbing experiment involving simulated torture. In the aftermath of the experiment, Kelly begins to experience extreme paranoia, hallucinations, and unpredictable behavior. The lines between reality and hallucination blur and the viewer is left guessing along with Kelly as to what is real and what is not.

As the story progresses, Kelly becomes more and more unhinged, his hallucinations becoming more intense and his behavior becoming increasingly erratic. His relationships with those around him deteriorate and his grip on reality continues to slip away. Kelly becomes convinced that he is the victim of a vast conspiracy, and that the people who are supposed to be helping him are actually part of a sinister plot against him.

What makes The Dark stand out is its gritty and no-nonsense approach to horror. The movie is not gory or overly violent, but instead relies on psychological and emotional tension to create a haunting and disturbing atmosphere. The filming is well-done and the visuals are bleak, with a strong emphasis on shadow, darkness, and eerie lighting.

Stephen McHattie delivers a stunning performance as Paul Kelly, capturing his descent into madness with an intensity that is both terrifying and captivating. Scott Wickware and Brion James deliver solid supporting performances as the antagonists, adding to the sense of paranoia that permeates the film.

The Dark is not for the faint of heart, it is a tense psychological thriller that will leave viewers on edge throughout the entire runtime. The movie dwells on the twisted and disturbing aspects of the human psyche, and explores the dark side of what can happen when people are pushed to their limits.

However, while the movie is dark and gloomy, it is also great for those who enjoy slow burns - it takes its time to build tension, but the payoff is worth it. The movie features a number of twists and turns that keep the viewer engaged, and the final act is truly shocking in its brutal and unforgiving nature. Overall, The Dark is a must-see horror film for fans of psychological horror or for anyone who wants to be unnerved and unsettled. If you have a passion for macabre, a taste for horror and want a good scare without relying on jump scares and gore, you should definitely give this movie a try - but be prepared, it may very well get under your skin.
