Ted Cole is a published author who hires a young college student to be his assistant for the summer. His wife Marion, suffers from depression which stems from a car accident which took the lives of the couple's two older sons. Ted tries desperately to bring his wife back to life so she can participate in raising their young daughter. Their home is filled with photos of the two boys, which Ted uses to tell Ruth stories about her older brothers. The college student Ted hires is named Eddie. Marion immediately takes a liking to Eddie, who develops a crush on her. Eddie has a room in the Cole's house where he stays, while Ted stays in an apartment in the city. Ted and Marion are separated and although Ted still loves his wife dearly, he does have an occasional fling with a local woman. Eddie does not know about the car accident which took the lives of their children. While he stays in the house, Marion's attitude changes and she becomes a happier person. She begins spending more time with Eddie and the two of them develop a romantic relationship. Ted is aware of the relationship developing between Eddie and Marion and is pleased his wife's mood is better. There is an instance when the two are having intimate relations and Ruth enters the room and discovers them. This does not please Ted who decides to get full custody of their daughter by getting Eddie to come forward about the relationship he had with Marion. This confrontation leads Ted to tell Eddie about the car accident. He also confesses he hired him specifically because he resembled one of their sons.
