The movie The Field is set in the mid-1930s in western Ireland. The main character, Bull McCabe, played by Richard Harris, has lived a rough life on a rented property. He had taken the land from a barren rock field into a prosperous land. Just as things seem to be going well, the widow that owns the property that he is on is going to sell it at auction.

Feeling that he has the upper hand in the land deal, and believing that none of his neighbors would try to take the land from him, he attends the auction in the belief that he will be the owner of the property by the end of the sale. However, Bull did not take into consideration that a wealthy Irish-American would be interested in the land.

This Irish-American businessman played by Tom Berenger wants to take the land and develop it into a paved area for the development of a new industry. Little does he know the drive behind Bulls desire to stay on the land. Bull, in an attempt to change the businessman's mind, sends his son to persuade the businessman to withdraw his bid.
