The Host is the story of a South Korean family that bands together to fight a gigantic, mutant river monster that has captured their teenage granddaughter. The grandfather, his slacker older son, unemployed younger son, and daughter (a member of the national archery team), set out to rescue the girl before she becomes lunch. Six years after an American military doctor orders his assistant to dump hundreds of bottles of formaldehyde into the sink, a monster emerges from the Han River and attacks people on the banks, including the snack bar owned by Park Hie-bong. Hie-bong's immature oldest son Gang-doo and Gang-doo's daughter Hyun-seo, try to escape the rampaging, man-eating monster. Sated by human flesh, the monster snags Hyun-seo and disappears into the river. Thinking her dead, the family attends a mass funeral for victims of the massacre. When the military swoops in and places survivors under quarantine, Hie-bong's family discovers the monster isn't just a danger to eat them; it is the host of a new, deadly virus. Gang-doo receives a cell phone call from his daughter who tells him the monster has trapped her in the sewers. Hie-bong, Gang-doo, archer Nam-joo, and Hie-bong's alcoholic youngest son Nam-il, escape quarantine and search for Hyun-seo. In the sewers, the monster drops a live human into a pit that holds Hyun-seo. The two try to escape not knowing the family is in the sewers searching for the girl. The family encounters the monster and attacks it. The monster fights back, killing Hie-bong. As the military prepares to dump a deadly poison into the river to kill the creature, the family finds itself trapped between a man-eating monster, a stop-at-nothing military, and a deadly virus that may, or may not exist. Gang-doo (Kang-ho Song), Nam-joo (Doona Bae), and Nam-il (Hae-il Park) have to rescue Hyun-seo (Ah-sung Ko) before it's too late.
