The Hour of the Pig is a 1993 British-French film directed by Leslie Megahey. The movie, set in medieval France, stars Colin Firth as Richard Courtois, an idealistic young lawyer who is hired to defend a pig accused of murder. The story takes place in the small town of Abbeville, in the year 1432. The region is in turmoil, as the Hundred Years War between England and France is still raging. The Catholic Church is also in a state of flux, with the Inquisition cracking down on heretics and witches.

Against this backdrop, Richard Courtois arrives in Abbeville to take up the position of advocate, or lawyer, for the local court. He is quickly thrust into a world of intrigue and danger, as he defends a pig accused of killing a young boy.

The case is complicated by the fact that the pig is owned by a Jewish family, and the local populace is already inclined to view them as outsiders and enemies. Richard is also hampered by the corrupt judge, who is more interested in appeasing the powerful nobles of the town than in rendering true justice.

Undeterred, Richard sets out to prove the pig's innocence, aided by his assistant, Mathilde (played by Amina Annabi), and the local doctor, Georges de Bellefleur (Jim Carter). As they investigate the case, they uncover a web of deceit and betrayal, involving not only the pig but also the boy's family and the church itself.

The Hour of the Pig is not just a courtroom drama, but also a vivid portrayal of life in medieval Europe. The film is rich in detail, from the costumes and architecture to the social customs and religious beliefs of the time.

The movie also raises important questions about justice and prejudice, as Richard faces not only the challenge of defending an animal but also the prejudices of his own society. The film highlights the dangers of scapegoating and the need for empathy and understanding.

The performances are excellent, particularly Colin Firth's portrayal of Richard Courtois. He captures the character's idealism and determination, as well as his naivety and vulnerability. Amina Annabi is equally impressive as Mathilde, bringing a sense of intelligence and instinct to her role.

Jim Carter, known for his role as Mr. Carson in Downton Abbey, is also fantastic as the wise and compassionate Dr. Georges de Bellefleur. His character provides a much-needed counterpoint to the corruption and cruelty of the other men in power.

The Hour of the Pig is a thoughtful and engaging film that merits more attention than it has received. It is not only a compelling drama but also a fascinating glimpse into a distant time and place. It raises important questions about justice and truth that are still relevant today.
