The film stars Emmy Rossum as ingénue aspiring opera singer Christine Daaé, Gerard Butler as the title Phantom, and Patrick Wilson as the Viconte de Chagny. Deep in the tunnels beneath the Paris Opera house a mysterious and disfigured masked man has built a home, creeping up to the theater to train chorus girl Christine to use her beautiful singing voice. When Christine is ready, the phantom of the opera house orchestrates the downfall of the opera's diva star Carlotta, played by Minnie Driver. Christine is given the opportunity to sing Carlotta's part and, during the performance, she's recognized by her childhood friend Raoul, now a viscount. Although Christine is reluctant because she knows the Phantom won't approve, she and Raoul begin a secret romance. The Phantom finally reveals himself to Christine, and she feels pity for him and guilt over her relationship with Raoul. The Phantom becomes jealous and begins shadowing Christine as well as taking his revenge by killing people who work in the theater. When Christine is visiting her father's grave the Phantom appears but so does Raoul and the rival lovers duel. When Raoul has the upper hand Christine begs for him to let the Phantom live and the couple leaves together as the Phantom vows to ruin them both. The Phantom kidnaps Christine and goes on a rampage, destroying parts of the opera house. Eventually he takes Raoul down to his lair and demands that Christine choose between himself and Raoul, a choice that will end Raoul's life if she chooses him over the Phantom. Above, a mob forms to come after the Phantom. She saves Raoul's life and chooses the Phantom. In the face of her kindness, the Phantom realizes he must let her go and sends them away before escaping himself.
