The Number 23 is a strange psychological thriller starring Jim Carrey. The story begins when Walter, played by Jim Carrey, receives a book from his wife Agatha as a birthday present. The book outlines the hidden meanings in all things which can be broken down to be the number 23. Walter becomes immersed in the book not only because of the information it contains but because the lead character is very similar to himself. Walter's job is in animal control and his first bizarre encounter takes place with a free roaming dog he attempts to catch. The dog leads him to the grave of a college student, which strangely was written about in the book. As time moves on Walter becomes increasingly paranoid about the people he encounters. He also begins breaking down words and messages into numbers which all break down to the number 23. Walter tries to discover the truth behind the murder by following clues he finds in the book. As Walter's obsession and paranoia increase his wife becomes concerned about his well being. Agatha tries to conduct her own investigation into her husbands strange behavior. In the meantime, Walter begins spending a lot of time in a hotel room he checked into shortly after he received the strange book. The movie consists of several layers of mysteries wrapped within each other. The murder of the college student is not the only mystery which eventually unravels. It seems the true identity of Walter is not what Agatha thought it was. The sequence of events unravel in such a way that the viewer does not find out the truth until it dawns on the character. It seems Walter has forgotten all about a life he had lived in the past. A life which contained secrets he needed to reveal by writing a book. The book he wrote it turns out is the very one his wife gave him for his birthday.
