Dark Crimes is a 2016 thriller directed by Alexandros Avranas and starring Jim Carrey, Marton Csokas, and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The film tells the story of Tadek, a detective in the Polish police force, who becomes obsessed with solving a murder case that has remained unsolved for years. The film is set in Warsaw, Poland, and opens with a young woman's body being found on the banks of the Vistula River. The victim, Kasia, was a drug addict and a prostitute, and her death seems to be the work of a serial killer. Tadek, who has a troubled past and a strained relationship with his wife and daughter, is assigned to the case, and he begins to investigate with his partner, a younger and inexperienced detective named Morgenstern.

As Tadek delves deeper into the case, he discovers that the victim's last client was a well-known novelist named Krystov Kozlow (Marton Csokas), who had written a book that seemed to describe Kasia's murder in detail. Convinced that Kozlow is the killer, Tadek becomes increasingly fixated on the writer, and he starts to cross the line between professional and personal. He visits Kozlow's house, starts to read his books, and even gets involved with Kozlow's girlfriend, a French translator named Kasia (Charlotte Gainsbourg).

As Tadek's obsession with Kozlow grows, he starts to disentangle a web of lies and secrets, and he uncovers a world of sadomasochism, prostitution, and corruption that seems to be linked to the case. The more he learns, the more he becomes convinced that Kozlow is guilty, and he risks everything to try and prove it.

Throughout the film, there are several flashbacks and dream sequences that reveal Tadek's troubled past and his motives for pursuing the case. We learn that he was a talented painter before he joined the police force, but he lost his daughter in a car accident and his wife blamed him for it. He is haunted by guilt and remorse, and it is suggested that he is looking for redemption through solving the case.

The film is shot in a dark and moody style, with lots of shadows, rain, and bleak cityscapes that evoke the noir genre. Jim Carrey, known for his comedic roles, gives a convincing and restrained performance as Tadek, conveying the character's complexity and inner turmoil. Marton Csokas is also excellent as the enigmatic Kozlow, who seems to be hiding something but is also strangely charismatic. Charlotte Gainsbourg, who plays Kasia and Kozlow's girlfriend, provides an emotional grounding for the story, and her scenes with Carrey are some of the film's highlights.

The film has received mixed reviews, with some critics praising its atmosphere and performances, while others have criticized its pacing and predictability. Some have also pointed out that the film is based on a true story, which adds an extra layer of intrigue to the film.

Overall, Dark Crimes is a gripping and suspenseful thriller that explores themes of guilt, obsession, and redemption. It is not an easy watch, as it deals with some dark and disturbing subject matter, but it rewards those who stick with it with a satisfying and thought-provoking conclusion.

Dark Crimes is a 2018 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. It has received poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.6 and a MetaScore of 24.
