Me, Myself & Irene is a 2000 American comedy film directed by the Farrelly brothers, Bobby and Peter. It stars Jim Carrey as Charlie Baileygates, a Rhode Island State Trooper with dissociative identity disorder, and Renée Zellweger as Irene P. Waters, a woman Charlie encounters during a work assignment. The film begins by introducing Charlie, a kind and well-liked state trooper who constantly bends over backwards to help others. However, years of swallowing his anger from his cheating wife Layla has caused Charlie to develop a second personality named Hank. Hank is loud, rude, and confrontational, the opposite of Charlie. Charlie remains unaware of Hank as he goes about life raising his triplet sons.
After Charlie apprehends a tax evader named Dickie for the FBI, Dickie's goons vandalize Charlie's home. This causes Hank to emerge for the first time. When Charlie comes back unaware, he thinks Dickie is responsible and travels to New York City to find him. There he meets Irene, who has just been dumped by her boyfriend. Irene asks Charlie to drive her home to Rhode Island.
On the drive back, Irene is pulled over for speeding. Hank emerges again and insults the officer, landing them both in jail. Irene bails them out but realizes Charlie's condition. She feels sympathy for him and offers to stay until Hank can be controlled. Charlie starts taking medication to suppress his angry alter-ego.
Charlie and Irene start developing a romantic connection. However, the FBI needs Charlie and Irene to testify against Dickie. Dickie's goons pursue them, trying to prevent the testimony. Action and hilarity ensue as Hank occasionally takes over Charlie's body during confrontations with the goons.
Charlie struggles to maintain control over Hank, who wreaks havoc whenever he emerges. Irene stands by Charlie's side, finding herself falling for him more and more. The two share funny and heartfelt moments as they evade Dickie's henchmen.
After an arduous journey, Charlie is finally able to testify against Dickie. With Irene's help, Charlie asserts control over Hank for good. The film ends with Charlie and Irene happily starting a life together, both relieved to close the book on Dickie and Hank.
Me, Myself & Irene combines madcap humor and chase sequences with an exploration of dissociative identity disorder. Jim Carrey excels at portraying the wildly different Charlie and Hank personas. Renée Zellweger provides the heartwarming love interest who sees past Charlie's condition. With laughs and adventure from start to finish, the movie explores the extremes of Jim Carrey's comedic talents while delivering an offbeat love story.
