The Promise is a Chinese fantasy film that was released only in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Asian theaters overall. The Promise starts with the character of Qingcheng, played by Cecelia Cheung, and Guan Xiaotong as the younger version, meeting a divine goddess named Manshen, who is played by Chen Hong. Manshen makes her a deal and grants Qingcheng the wish of being the wealthiest and most attractive person all over, however at the cost of never knowing what true love is for all eternity. On top of this, she is taken on as a concubine of the king. Later on, a man named General Guangming, played by Hiroyuki Sanada, is seen defeating an entire army of Barbarians despite being outnumbered himself and gains a slave by the name of Kunlun, played by Jang Dong-gun. However, the general is wounded by an assassin and asks Kunlun to wear his armor and save the king from a warlord who has laid siege to the Imperial City. The Promise was directed, written and produced by Chen Kaige, along with producers Jiang Tao and Chen Rao. The movie is also spoken entirely in Mandarin Chinese.

Description
