The River Wild is a 1994 action suspense film about a family who encounters two violent convicts while on a whitewater-raft outing. Tom (David Straithairn) and Gail (Meryl Streep) are a married couple who embark on a rafting outing along Idaho's Salmon River with their son Roarke (Joseph Mozello). As they leave, they meet rafters Wade (Kevin Bacon) and Terry (John C. Reilly), who initially seem like a friendly pair. As the group make their way down the river, all is well. They make camp that night, and Wade and Terry join in with Roarke's birthday celebration. The next day, Gail becomes suspicious of Wade and begins to contemplate how to rid themselves of both men. Once on the river, Tom, Gail and Roarke try to escape on their own raft but their attempts are thwarted by a gun-brandishing Wade. It comes to Gail's attention that Wade and Terry are armed robbers being sought by the police. They are now forced to navigate down the dangerous rapids at gunpoint. After setting up camp for the night, park ranger Johnny (Benjamin Bratt) comes across the group in the woods. With a gun at her back, Gail is forced to pretend that everything is okay. Although suspicious, Johnny leaves the area. He is later shot and dumped into the rapids by Wade. In order to escape, Gail is forced to navigate an extremely dangerous part of the rapids. After making camp that night, Tom attempts to steal a sleeping Wade's gun. Wade awakens and shoots at Tom as he chases him into the woods. The next day, Tom reappears and is able to flip the raft carrying the criminals and Gail and Roarke, who are bound. Gail is able to retrive the gun and shoot Wade, who is carried off by the rapids. The film ends with Terry being arrested.
